On Todays 5minute Friday, I am going to show you, how to prepare your perennials for winter.
We are outside today in our plant trial garden, that we have been using for our peat free compost trials, now it is time to bring our plants in. We aren’t going to do this with all of them, as people like to bring them to a more sheltered spot, but it’s not always the cold that is a problem. It is often the wet that will kill the plants through the winter. So, if you have plants that need a well-drained soil, it is worth considering bringing them to a more sheltered spot for the winter. Perhaps for example, Lavenders, that really don’t like to sit wet.
You can see all of the different plants in our trials, and how different they are with the trial composts, we are recording these results and will be letting you know soon, how we get on. So, to clean them up, you will notice dead leaves on your perennials, so remove those, which will prevent it from rotting. Also remove any weeds, try, and pull the root of the weed out too. They are now much tidier and will be helped through the winter, by not having all those dead leaves and weeds around the crown of the plant.
