On Todays 5minute Friday, we are going to show you, how to pot up your starter (plug) plants.
I have picked up a couple to demonstrate, so I have a Fuchsia here and a Bidens. Before I start, something we get asked frequently is, do you peel off the sleeve/cover surrounding the plant ? Our plugs are all in paper, which will degrade in the compost, so you don’t need to remove the paper, in fact by doing so, you may damage some of the good root growth.
Early spring lots of you will be getting deliveries like this, it’s a great way to get plants for the garden, well rooted and that grow relatively quickly.
When you unpack them, check if they need a little water, as they have been through the postal system. The ideal size pot for these, with few exceptions, is a 9cm pot, or even slightly bigger, but certainly not smaller. For these plants, once potted, you still want them inside for now.
Even if these are going into baskets, it is still better to pot them up now, giving them time to become even more rooted.

- Fill the pot with a nice well-draining compost and tap it down to get rid of any air gaps.
- Make a hole about the same size as your plug, then just pop it in, and gently tuck it in. No need to compact it at all.
