On Todays 5minute Friday, I am demonstrating how to cut back your Geraniums.
In this video, I will show you how to take your Geraniums (Pelargoniums), through the winter. I say Geraniums, but of course, that is how in the UK they are referred to, but we know, they are Pelargoniums.
These are Perennial plants but are not that easy, to take through the winter, but many people are successful and it’s worthwhile, with all the love and care you have given it, to get it to this stage, so why not try. The other variable, of course is the weather, if we get a particularly cold winter, this makes it all a little more challenging.
Geraniums are herbaceous perennials mainly, easy to grow and low maintenance. They are, once established drought and pest tolerant. With their foliage and oh so pretty blooms, what's not to love about Geraniums.

How to take cut back your Geranium plants.
- We cut these back quite hard, so work your way around the plant, cutting it back low, as shown on video.
- I will remove the dead leaves, and then it is done, it really doesn’t look the prettiest, but it helps the plant through the winter.
- Store the plant in a frost-free place, a conservatory, or a green house with an element of heat, your shed, wherever you have at home it’s up to you.
- We reduce drastically on watering it through the winter, going for long periods of time, not watering it. It won’t be using any water, and we definitely don’t want it sitting wet.
